Don Muthuswami recent movie review

Mithun Chakraborty, Shakti Kapoor, Rohit Roy The proceedings of DON MUTHUSWAMI can be digested in
intervals. The comedy at times is funny, at times passable and at times, bearable. Mithun Chakraborty makes all the
difference carrying the film on his shoulders with his matured acting and seasoned understanding of the role he has to
portray. Lesser actors would have fallen by the wayside in trying to continuously keep up the comic act. But not DON
MUTHUSWAMI (Mithun Chakraborty), who is in a dilemma. His father, before dying, extracts a promise from him that he
would mend his ways and from a Don become a good man. Muthuswami is in a fix, so are his henchmen who watch in
disbelief as his father passes away after the Don has given his promise. There is no going back on his word now. From
Don, he wants to transform into Sir Muthuswamy and his henchmen are still with him but they now double up as
domestic help.
But Don being Don wants to marry off his daughter to the son of another Don. Sanjana (Hrishitaa Bhatt) refuses to be
transferred to another prison; from her home to another Don's home. So she resorts to lying that she is pregnant to call
off the marriage. Add to it Don's manager Pritam (Rohit Roy) who wants to marry his daughter and the confusion is
complete.
The Urdu teacher, Jaikishan (Mohit Raina), hired to polish Don's language skills also falls in love with Sanjana. And
there are the cops who are on the Don's trail to see whether he has really turned a new leaf. Everything takes place in a
matter of one day in the Don's house.
Comedy, when pulled off easily on screen looks easy. But in reality, comedy is a serious business. It's all about getting
into the mood of things and staying afloat rather than going overboard. Once the fine line is crossed between this
delicate art of making the audience laugh, it no longer remains a comedy but a farce. Thankfully, Mithun manages to
gather his enormous experience to keep the proceedings within the fine line.
His act takes one back to the AGNEPAATH days when he played 'Kishen Iyer Nariyal Paaniwala'. This is Mithun of old,
at his best. Among the cast, Dilip Joshi (Fikarchand) Rakesh Bedi (Shikharchand) combine well as tailors who give
Muthuswami a new look. Making his presence on the screen after a long time, Rakesh Bedi does well for himself.
I'm sure we will see more of this actor. The actor who plays Shakti Kapoor's sidekick (Vishal Kotian) impresses with his
comic timing. Rohit Roy is OK so is Shakti Kapoor. Frankly, he is much more talented than what he is made to do.
Hrishitaa Bhatt adds to the glam quotient. While she matches the mood in some scenes with Mithun, she crosses the fine
line in a few scenes. That's expected as there seems to be no focus given to her role which could have been developed
into a much meatier option. Mithun was the focus of attention.
